Kalamazoo is a mid-sized metropolitan area
with a diverse economic base and population (230,000 in the county). Residents
include a large number of Asian Americans (around 1,800). About 3,200 residents
speak Spanish at home and another 3,000 speak a European language other than
English as their first language. With Western Michigan University and its 26,000
students as well as KVCC, Kalamazoo
College, and Davenport College, Kalamazoo
has a strong "college town" flavor.
