Kalamazoo Valley Women's Basketball |
November 22, 2008 KVCC (78) vs.
St Clair County C. C.(54) at
Alpena, MI in East West Classic
Coach's comments:
Shooting only 18% from three(2/11) in the first
half as a team, the Cougar's 6'2" sophomore post player Jeannie Closson stepped
up and led the KVCC gals to a 34-24 halftime lead with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
"Jeannie's capable of going off like that at any time and we certainly needed
her in the first half." said Coach Welch. The rest of us were kinda
'scuffling' so it was nice to see her step up. Her teammates were very
good at the defensive end and put Jeannie in a position to score and she did."
The older Closson ended with 16 points and 8 rebounds for the game.
Closson's teammates really picked up the
pace in the second half offensively while continuing to apply the defensive
pressure they have become known for in the past. Emulating her sister, Dee
Dee Closson picked up where Jeannie left off in the first tallying 11 points and
7 rebounds in the 2nd half. Nicole Compher was again a spark plug off the
bench with 8 points and 4 steals and Ericka King and Mariah Hilliard did a
masterful job of getting the Cougars into their offensive scheme, each
contributing 3 assists and 7 & 5 points respectively. "I thought
that Roni (King) made some huge plays at the end of the first half that really
captured the momentum for us going into the 2nd half." praised Welch. "She
was really solid all weekend."
The Cougars pretty much dominated the
stats sheet. After getting out rebounded in the first half 24-21, a
27-17 effort in the second stanza gave them a 48-41 edge on the game.
Caitlin Krull was again the leading rebounder with 10 caroms - 8 of which were
at the defensive end. The marksmanship from the field was MUCH better in
the second half as the Kalamazoo team was 19/39 (48.7%) and ended shooting 44.3%
for the game. The Cougar bench outscored their counterparts 39-21.
KVCC held a normally good shooting SC4 team to no made three pointers out
scoring them 15-0 from behind the arc and also controlled the paint with 24
points in the paint as opposed to 14 for the Lady Skippers.
