This certificate program prepares students for entry-level transcription employment in the office of a health agency, hospital, pharmaceutical organization, or private health practice. Communication, keyboarding, medical terminology, and software training skills are all part of this program. Many of the core courses apply to the Administrative Assistant AAS Degree program.

BIO 110 Anatomy and Physiology 4-3-3 (Lecture/Standard Lab) This one semester course presents a detailed study of structure and function of the eleven (11) human body systems. Emphasis is placed on normal body systems. Laboratory exercises require hands-on experiences with three dimensional models, photomicrography, and virtual anatomy software. Prerequisites: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: HCR 118 or BIO 101.

BUS 160 Business Writing Skills 3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This course reinforces the usage of correct language and style skills required in business writing, such as grammar, commas, semicolons, colons, and other punctuation marks. Effective sentences, paragraphs, and proofreading skills are stressed. Business memos, persuasive letters, public relations letters, response letters, and informative letters are also stressed. In addition, effective methods for communicating electronically are covered in this course. Prerequisites: BUS 111 or keyboarding 40 wpm, BUS 109 or MS Word experience.

BUS 202 Keybrd III/Doc Format/Skillbld 3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This course is designed to reinforce the skills of formatting and keyboarding office documents such as letters, reports, memorandums, tables and repetitive correspondence. Decision making will be stressed as students complete an office information processing simulation. Keyboarding skillbuilding will be stressed using Cortez Peters Championship Keyboarding Drills. BUS 222 Medical Transcription I 3-0-9 (Open Lab) Using a digital transcriber and Microsoft Word, this open-lab course provides a hands-on experience of transcribing medical dictation to produce various medical reports and correspondence commonly used in a hospital or clinical setting. Emphasis is given on the accurate use of medical terminology, grammar, spelling, punctuation and formatting while meeting demanding productivity standards. BUS 242 Info Processing Software Appl 4-4-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This course will expand the student's understanding of information processing through further study of principles, practices, and systems. Emphasis will be placed on advanced and complex operations of MS Word. Both hands-on applications and lecture/discussion will take place in this course. BUS 244 Automated Office Procedures 3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This is a capstone course designed to provide students with realistic exposure to the office environment. Focus is on the changing role and responsibility of the administrative assistant, technology of the virtual office, decision-making, interpersonal relations, office communications, career development and ethical behavior. Skills related to time management, creative and critical thinking, meeting and travel arrangements, and integration of office software are all covered. Simulations of general, medical, or legal office environments will give students skills needed in the offices of today. Prerequisites: Keyboarding at 45 wpm, and BUS 109, BUS 111, BUS 121, BUS 160.

This course will fulfill the prerequisite requirements for BIO 130 and is recommended for students taking BIO 110.
