Careers in Human Services include the areas of child care, civil service, education, hospitality and the social services. Valued and respected workers in this pathway include counselors, teachers, religious leaders, and public safety officers.
American Sign Language
American Sign Language Studies Certificate of Achievement
This Certificate of Achievement supplements an associate degree in any area, including criminal justice, education, health careers, journalism, and social work. The COA may also be used to complement an AA or AS (transfer) degree and could be beneficial to a professional seeking ADA compliance. Completion of the COA does not allow the student to be certified as an interpreter. Contact Sue Cutler, KVCC faculty, for further information at (269) 488-4482.
Coaching
Coaching Certificate
The coaching certificate program is designed to provide specific certification and credentials for individuals to be employed as a coach for a school system or a club program. This program would train individuals in the basic competencies needed to be a coach of a sport. The certificate consists of 31 credit hours of “program major courses” and “elective courses.”
Fire Science
Fire Science Associate of Applied Science
Students must possess a valid FIREFIGHTER II CERTIFICATE issued by the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council or the Indiana Public Safety Training Institute prior to registering for Fire Science Technical classes.
Fire Fighting Certificate
The Fire Science Certificate Program is offered as a career advancement program for the already certified volunteer or career firefighter. The program can recognize a limited number of training certifications issued by the States of Michigan and Indiana. Students possessing state certifications should contact the KVCC Fire Science department for transferability. Students in need of Firefighter II Certification should contact the Fire Science Department at 269.488.4202. All credits in this program apply directly towards the Fire Science AAS degree.
Law Enforcement
Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Associate of Applied Science
This program offers course work in the criminal justice field. Students wishing to transfer credit to a university should check with a KVCC counselor.
Law Enforcement Specialist for Certification Associate of Applied Science
The Law Enforcement Training Center certification program provides a broad-based general education along with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Basic Law Enforcement Certification. Students will learn police organization, criminal investigation, traffic control, delinquency, criminal law, and enforcement procedures. Upon meeting graduation and MCOLES requirements the student may be eligible to take the mandatory certification examination given by MCOLES. After completion of these courses through the Police Academy, credit will be articulated. Contact the Academy office for further information at (269) 488-4061.
