Credit for Life Experience

Credit for life experience or prior learning is a term used by colleges to describe credit earned for learning received outside of   a particular school and from non-college experiences.

KVCC  recognizes that over the years you may have acquired valuable skills, abilities,  and knowledge that are equivalent to and worthy of college credit. If that is the case, then read on to consider if you should pursue one of the following methods in order to receive credit for learning gained through life experience.

Who is eligible to apply for credit for prior learning?  Anyone admitted to KVCC is eligible to apply if the learning meets the following  criteria:

  • College level

  • Comparable to KVCC courses and program requirements

  •  Fully documented

What types of  learning receive credit? Click here for information on Assessment of Prior Learning.

Transfer Credit

Credit  taken at other colleges/universities may be transferred to KVCC.  Depending upon the courses taken and the current program of study, transfer courses may be used to meet program requirements or electives.  An official transcript is used to make these determinations, and you may send the official record to the  KVCC Counseling Office, Texas Township Campus.

American Council on Education Guides

Another source of credit is through recommendations  made by the American Council on Education Guides for military training and Business/Industry  courses. In order to use ACE recommendations, call or visit the Counseling Office in Room 1340 on the Texas Township Campus, or phone (269) 488-4407.

Credit by Examination

Credit may be earned by testing out of specific courses. Credit by examination requires the willingness and cooperation of a faculty member. Your counselor can help you make arrangements if you are interested in this option.

Advanced Placement

AP tests for high school students are sponsored by the College Entrance Examination Board.  Contact your high school and have your AP scores sent to the KVCC Admissions, Registration, and Records Office for consideration.

CLEP Testing

Credit may be granted for successful completion of exams given by the College Level Examination Program (CLEP).  You may test in subjects of your choice at KVCC's Testing Center in Room 2210 on the Texas Township Campus.  Call (269) 488-4235 for more information

Credit by Portfolio

Portfolio development is the method used at KVCC to document prior life/work learning. Credit is earned when students enroll in special courses where faculty evaluate the portfolio and assess the individual's knowledge.  KVCC counselors are available to assist in the development and presentation  of the portfolio.
