Kalamazoo Valley Community College has established a committee to address pandemic planning and preparedness. Efforts are in affiliation with the Kalamazoo County Department of Health and Community Services and Western Michigan University. All information and decisions will be consistent with county and state plans and KVCC will defer to government authority and public health directives.

Being prepared both at home, at school, and in the workplace makes sense. Below are web-based resources as well as KVCC informational updates.

If you are a student and you need to stay home due to illness, please contact your instructor directly.
If your instructor's contact information is not on your Class Assignment documents, please call Faculty Reception to request your instructor's contact information.

January 6, 2010: "We are entering what is traditionally the worst of the flu season," said Dr. Lisa Marshall, WMU medical director. "No one can predict how widespread flu-like illness will be this winter, but we know both H1N1 and seasonal flu will be present."

Vaccine Update: All Michigan residents are now eligible to receive the HINI Vaccination
Vaccine information for Kalamzoo County

Prevalence: According to the Centers for Disease Control, reported influenza-like illness increased significantly throughout the country during the holiday season after steadily declining in November and early December.

Steps To Prevent the Flu

  • Get both the seasonal vaccination and the H1N1 vaccination.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water (use anti-bacterial gel if soap and water are not available).
  • Remember to scrub while you wash (friction is important to the cleaning process). If you can sing happy birthday twice during your cleaning session you're spending the right amount of time cleaning your hands.
  • Cover your sneezes and coughs with a tissue or your elbow.
  • Avoid others with respiratory illnesses.
  • Unless it's an emergency, call a health care provider about your flu-like symptoms. The best option may be to stay home until your illness is resolved itself instead of seeing your provider.
