Concentration

Concentration

Concentration is an elusive kind of thing. It is not a process; rather, a by-product. It only happens when you don’t think about it. If you are in deep concentration and then realize you’re concentrating, you no longer are! You are now thinking about concentration rather than the subject matter.

Difficulties in Concentration

ü      Fear of failure

ü      External distractions (noise, physical comfort, etc.)

ü      Internal distractions (indecision, personal problems, etc.)

Techniques to Improve Concentration

  1. Develop a positive attitude. It is difficult to concentrate on a subject you dislike or find hard.
  2. Organize your time well and set aside enough for studying.
  3. Choose a study area carefully. (A relatively comfortable, quiet, well-lit place where learning materials are handy.)
  4. Have the necessary equipment/materials ready.
  5. Eliminate possible interferences and learn to say no.
  6. Focus your attention or “tune in” by previewing or reviewing the material first.
  7. Be active in your learning. Read it! Write it! Say it! Do it! Involvement promotes concentration.
