Please mark your calendars for the two-day Fall 2019 Summit scheduled for August 28 and 29. Wednesday's meetings and activities and Thursday afternoon's sessions are designed for faculty members, but staff are welcome to attend if approved by their supervisors. The morning of Thursday, August 29 will include workshops, round table discussions and other activities for both faculty and staff.
Dr. Christine J. McPhail, president and CEO of The McPhail Group LLC, a higher education consulting firm, will be the keynote speaker for the Fall 2019 Together is Better Summit, set for August 28 and 29 at the Texas Township Campus.
Dr. McPhail has served on a variety of national boards and task forces including the Gates Foundation’s Completion by Design National Advisory Committee; the Future President’s Institute sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC); Board of Directors for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC ); National Advisory Council for the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE); Advisory Committee for the National Center for Postsecondary Research (NCPR) at the Community College Research Center at Columbia Teachers College (CCRC); the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC); Affirmative Action Officer, Division J, American Education Research Association (AERA); and the Editorial Board for the Community College Journal of Research and Practice.
She is the author and coauthor of numerous articles and books including From Tall to Matrix: Redefining Organizational Structures (Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, August 2016); Practical Leadership in Community Colleges: Navigating Today's Challenges coauthored with George R. Boggs; Establishing and Sustaining Learning Centered Community Colleges (an AACC best-selling publication); Fighting the Execution Gap Syndrome: Real Strategies for Student Success (2015); A Case for Grow-Your-Own (2014); Leave the Cave: Professional Development to Improve Student Success (2013); Illuminating the Experiences of African-American Female Community College Students in Developmental Education (2011); Bringing Teaching and Learning to the Board Room: A Professional Development Framework (2011); and Transforming Classroom Practice for African American Learners: Implications for the Learning Paradigm, (co-authored with her husband, Irving Pressley McPhail), which won the 2000 Research Award from the Maryland Association for Adult, Community and Continuing Education.

Communication - Myths and Misconceptions
- Facilitators: Jenny Ott
- Description: Come and experience the first lesson in my interpersonal communication course where students consider the communication knowledge they're entering into the class with and whether it's all correct or based on misconceptions. This is typically a highly engaging, nonthreatening, simple small group and large group discussion with no prior course knowledge needed. Participants will gain insight on communication fundamentals from a scholarly perspective and be exposed to the benefits of in-class discussion and application to everyday lived experiences.

Understanding Introversion and Extroversion in the Classroom
- Facilitator: Tracey Corbett
- Description: You’ll find a mixture of introverts and extroverts in any classroom. So, what does this mean and how should this inform how modern higher education classes are taught? In the United States, our culture favors extroverted personalities over introverted ones - in K-12, higher education and in most industries and places of employment. During discussions of creating a diverse and inclusive environment for student success, introversion and extroversion awareness should also be included these conversations and efforts. During this presentation, we’ll define extroversion and introversion according to the MBTI, discuss the neurobiological differences between the two, learn how to identify students who are actually engaged introverted personalities vs those students who are not engaged and provide practical strategies to engage both extroverts and introverts in the classroom.

- Description: In this 1 hour-long session, Melody Woods, Community Outreach and Life Enrichment Program Coordinator, will speak about the Momentum Urban Employment Initiative; why the program exists, why Kalamazoo Valley chooses to partner, who we serve, and how you can support. The college has partnered with Urban Alliance through offering academies in Computer Numerical Control, Production Tech, Manufacturing and Material Handling, Warehouse Management and Inventory Control, and Culinary and Sustainable Food Systems since 2015 and has graduated more than 100 students.

- Description: Student success and completion are at the center of many conversations taking place in community colleges. In order to improve student success and completion, community colleges must enhance student learning, develop pathways for success, engage students for retention, and enhance the student experience. This session will focus on the unique role of student affairs professionals in these endeavors. - Description: Universal design and accessibility are terms that we have heard as important for an inclusive environment in the classroom. We know what those terms mean, but how do they impact our approach in the classrooms? At times it may seem like an imposition. At other times it is an intuitive mindset when designing our courses. The accommodation letters for students that we receive at times seem insurmountable or impossible for our classroom. This roundtable is designed to discuss what accommodations mean and how to approach situations in the classroom when students make requests beyond the accommodation. We will discuss the demystification of disabilities and ideas that have worked and not worked for instructors in a judgment-free zone. Communication is key when helping students who work with Student Access as well as aiding instructors to develop teaching tools that can benefit all students. Bring your questions as well as experiences to discuss and create a community with your fellow faculty members. Come for a lively and inspirational conversation to stimulate creative approaches to creating a more inclusive classroom environment.

Capturing the Student Voice: Reviewing the first year of Kalamazoo Valley's Student Voices Advisory Council | SESSION IS FULL

- Description: This session will focus on the development and implementation of Kalamazoo Valley's Student Voices Advisory Council (SVAC). The main goal of the SVAC is to gain insight into how students experience Kalamazoo Valley Community College, as well as students' thoughts and opinions about day-to-day operations on campus. Uncovering the direct experiences of our current students has better equipped us with information needed to make positive changes to programs and services provided across the institution. Assembling this council has allowed us an avenue to capture qualitative measures of student satisfaction while simultaneously improve student engagement.
