The 5-kilometer Eric Zapata Memorial Run hosted by Kalamazoo Valley Community College on April 19 drew more than 700 participants. Law enforcement officials were a big part of the tribute, with the Kalamazoo Public Safety Honor Guard starting the race.
Kalamazoo Valley Community College Public Safety Director Rick Ives said the college has been a sponsor of the event for each of the three years that it’s been held. “It’s a great way to honor and remember a fellow officer who devoted his life to protecting the public,” Ives said. Zapata was a 10-year veteran of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. The Eric Zapata Memorial Foundation offers scholarships for area students to pursue law enforcement careers and training for those already on the job.
