Kalamazoo Valley Community College celebrated its 73rd commencement on April 27. More than 750 students participated in the ceremony with a packed audience at Western Michigan University's Miller Auditorium.
The faculty speaker was foreign language instructor Jonnie Wilhite. This year’s student speaker was U.S. Army veteran Audree Morrison, who received an associate degree in Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice.
Morrison, 28, made national headlines last fall during the government shutdown when she was interviewed by ABC National News urging the government to reopen before veterans' benefits run out. She was part of a demonstration by The Military Coalition, which brought more than 30 veterans' groups together at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. She told her fellow graduates to keep persevere. “Our message is to never quit,” she said.
