For the first time since 2006, Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s Cougar Softball team has advanced to the National tournament.
The team will travel to Clinton, Mississippi for the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Region XII District G women’s softball tournament. The team’s first game takes place on Wednesday, May 15.
To advance to the Nationals, the team defeated Owens Community College on Friday, May 10. “We’re extremely pleased that our softball team qualified for the National tournament,” Kalamazoo Valley Community College Athletic Director Russ Panico said. This is the first time the team has gone to Nationals with coach Mike Clark, who has been the head coach for seven years. The team won the Conference Championship in 2012 and 2013. In 2011, Kalamazoo Valley and Muskegon Community College were co-champions.
“This is very exciting,” Panico said. “They players are all very motivated and they’ve all worked really hard.”
