Kalamazoo Valley Community College is hosting a flag retirement ceremony at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3 at the flagpole entrance at the Texas Township campus.
The ceremony, a tribute to the history and lineage of the American flag, helps to demonstrate a renewed sense of pride, solidarity and honor.
Jeff Maxson, a Kalamazoo Valley alumni and Battle Creek firefighter, will lead the ceremony. Maxson and his family travel the area ensuring that flags are disposed of with honor and dignity. They have voluntarily retired more than 100 flags in the past 10 years.
Worn, tattered and no longer used flags are welcome for donation.
The ashes of the retired flags will be incorporated into the foundation of the Veterans Memorial Tribute Garden at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. The event is open to the public.
