opportunities that empower all to learn, grow and thrive.

May 14, 2026

Greetings,

Warm weather appears to have finally arrived! Seeing the sunshine daily boosts my spirits and helps to set the tone for our summer season of community collaborations. Many of you will be out and about in the community at festivals, farmers markets and other events, spreading the word about the excellent education offered at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. We’re proud of the equitable, innovative education our students receive.

Summer semester has begun and we are looking forward to working with our students. I hope that this semester begins a fresh season of growth and learning for all of us. Thank you for the important work that you are doing and for the caring spirit you share with our students, colleagues and broader community.

Traveling Abroad This Summer? Plan Ahead for System Access
Kalamazoo Valley blocks login attempts from outside the U.S. In order to ensure continued access while traveling, employees should complete identity verification in advance. This can be done in person at a campus computer lab or through a scheduled virtual appointment with a valid photo ID. Taking a few minutes to plan ahead will help prevent access issues while abroad.

Security Best Practices to Detect and Avoid Phishing Attempts
To help protect your personal information and institutional data, please keep the following security best practices in mind when reviewing your messages.

  • Be suspicious of unexpected emails, texts or messages claiming to come from Canvas, Instructure, IT departments, other instructors or students.
  • Be suspicious of messages that use language that creates urgency such as “your account will be disabled” or “reset your password immediately.”
  • Do not respond to messages asking for your personal information, account information or credentials. If you are concerned, verify with a reliable resource using a known phone number, website or known email address.
  • Never click login links in emails; instead, access institutional systems through bookmarked websites or by manually typing known URLs into your browser.
  • Examine sender addresses and links for misspellings, unusual domains, extra words or fake login pages, remembering that attackers often make addresses appear legitimate at first glance.

Electronic Textbooks and Courseware Available for Classes
Please let summer session students know that they automatically get electronic versions of textbooks and other course materials for their classes. It's called Ready Day One! The cost is charged to their tuition bill. E-books tend to be at least 50 percent cheaper than hardcover and paperback textbooks. Please note that electronic materials are ONLY available in classes where the instructor selected the option for the course and many do!

What students need to know:
  • Within 24 hours of registering for a class with the electronic materials option, Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s Texas Township Campus Bookstore sends an email indicating that students are enrolled in Ready Day One and that e-course materials will be available in their Canvas account on the first day of class. It’s important to watch for the email.
  • If they wish to opt out and remove the Ready Day One charge from their tuition bill (it will be itemized there and titled “Inclusive Access”), they must act within two weeks from the first day of class. They have three options for doing so: Complete the transaction via their Canvas account, email the Bookstore at bookstore.kvcc.edu or call the Bookstore at 269.488.4030.

Summer Reading
Consider reading a good book this summer! We have books that support both discipline-related and personal interests.
  • Find reading suggestions by browsing our in-library displays and New Books
  • Search for a book by genre or theme in the NoveList Plus database.
  • If we don’t have a title you’re looking for, you can request books through MeLCat and have it delivered to either campus library.
  • Looking for books on a summer Friday? Check out your local public library
Request Library Instruction
Bring your students to the library for research instruction or assignment-based exploration. Or, invite a librarian to visit your classroom to introduce information literacy concepts. We are ready to collaborate with instructors to meet the unique needs of their students. Ready to schedule or need more information? Contact Mark Walters (x4326 or mwalters@kvcc.edu).

Reserve Textbooks
Textbooks and other course materials are placed on reserve each semester at the request of faculty and students. Instructors may submit personal copies for the reserve collection or request a library purchase for reserve. Most reserve requests for library purchase are approved.

For more information on course reserves, including a list of all items currently on reserve, visit the library's Course Reserve Guide. To reserve materials for your course, contact Ashley Berkamp (x4313 or abergkamp@kvcc.edu).

Technology Loan

Students can borrow a laptop computer, Wi-Fi hot spot and/or a graphing calculator. Technology is available on a first come, first served basis; a Valley ID is required for checkout. Borrowing begins on the first day of classes. All laptops have webcams and microphones and access to Canvas, Zoom, Microsoft Office and Respondus Lockdown Browser.
