AUTO 110 General Automotive Service
2-1-3 (Lecture/Standard Lab) A comprehensive study of today's automobiles and the various facets of automotive servicing and maintenance. Subjects covered include: engine and chassis lubrication, tire and wheel service, inspection and replacement of filters and complete vehicle inspection. Technical information and tune-up specifications are also covered. This is a good course for the do-it-yourselfer or someone wanting to learn more about today's automobiles. This is not required for automotive technology majors. Prerequisites: Minimum ACT Writing Skills score of 18 or COMPASS score of 70 or successful completion of ENG 098 or ENG 099; and minimum ACT Reading score of 13 or COMPASS score of 61 or TRS 096 and TRS 105; and minimum ACT Math Test score of 17 or COMPASS PreAlgebra Test score of 44 or MATH 092, MATH 093, or MATH 094.

AUTO 112 Shop Fundamentals
2-1-3 (Lecture/Standard Lab) This is a required course for all automotive students to acquaint the student with the automotive laboratory and to train the student in proper shop safety, tool and equipment usage, service order writing, and technician responsibility. Prerequisites: Minimum ACT Writing Skills score of 18 or COMPASS score of 70 or successful completion of ENG 098 or ENG 099; and minimum ACT Reading score of 13 or COMPASS score of 61 or TRS 096 and TRS 105; and minimum ACT Math Test score of 17 or COMPASS PreAlgebra Test score of 44 or MATH 092, MATH 093, or MATH 094. Corequisites: All automotive courses.

AUTO 112 Shop Fundamentals

AUTO 120 Intro to Automotive Electrical
4-2-4 (Lecture/Standard Lab) This course will build a solid foundation of electrical theory and principles needed for diagnosis and repair of basic automotive systems. Materials covered in this course will include Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's law, electron theory, capacitance, resistance, AC/DC currents, magnetism, and wiring diagram usage. Prerequisites: Minimum ACT Writing Skills score of 18 or COMPASS score of 70 or successful completion of ENG 098 or ENG 099; and minimum ACT Reading score of 13 or COMPASS score of 61 or TRS 096 and TRS 105; and minimum ACT Math Test score of 17 or COMPASS PreAlgebra Test score of 44 or MATH 092, MATH 093, or MATH 094. Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 120 Intro to Automotive Electrical

AUTO 121 Auto Electrical/Electronics Sy
4-2-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab) A comprehensive study of the operational theory of the automotive electrical and electronic systems. The student will learn the proper service and diagnosis of these systems with the use of sophisticated test equipment and hands-on experience. Prerequisites: AUTO 112, AUTO 120 Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 130 Automotive Brake Systems
4-2-5 (Lecture/Standard Lab) This course provides theory of operation and service procedures for conventional, anti-lock brake systems, traction control systems, and other related brake system components. Areas to be covered include: hydraulic systems, disc and drum brakes, power assist units, and brake electrical circuits. Prerequisites: AUTO 112, AUTO 121.

AUTO 135 Steering & Suspension System
4-2-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab) The student will have a good understanding of the theory of operation and service of today's advanced steering and suspension systems upon completion of this course. Topics covered include suspension diagnosis and repair (including air ride suspension), steering diagnosis and repair, and two- and four-wheel alignment service. Prerequisites: AUTO 112, AUTO 121. Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 140 Manual Transmission/Driveline
4-2-5 (Lecture/Standard Lab) Manual transmissions/transaxles, transfer cases, drive axles, ring and pinion gears, universal/constant velocity joints, and clutch theory of operation and service are all covered in this course. The student will be trained in proper diagnosis and repair of these components. Prerequisites: AUTO 112. Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 141 Automatic Transmission/Transax
4-2-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab) Students will become familiar with the theory of operation, service, and diagnosis and repair of automatic transmissions/transaxles found on today's cars and light duty trucks. Diagnostic equipment will be used to troubleshoot various malfunctions. Prerequisites: AUTO 112, AUTO 121. Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 151 Fuel and Emissions Systems
4-2-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab) The student will be provided with a basic understanding of the theory and operation of the fuel metering and emission devices found on past and present automobiles and light trucks and how they relate to engine performance. Practical experience will be gained through diagnosing, testing, and servicing the various systems found on these vehicles. Ignition systems will also be covered. Prerequisites: AUTO 112, AUTO 121. Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 153 Adv Fuel & Emissions Systems
4-2-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab) The student will expand on the knowledge gained in Fuel and Emission Systems AUTO 151 course and apply the theories to the more advanced systems found on current vehicles. Systems covered include computer controlled electronic ignition and fuel systems, distributorless ignition, direct ignition, throttle-body and port fuel injection, on-board diagnostic II systems, and other related component systems. Prerequisites: AUTO 112, AUTO 121, AUTO 151. Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 161 Engine Overhaul
4-2-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab) This course is designed to provide students with the theory of operation and design of the internal combustion engine and related systems. Theory is supported by complete tear down, inspection and measurement of an engine in preparation for engine overhaul. Noises and performance situations are covered as well. The student will gain hands-on exposure by overhauling his/her engine or a shop engine. Prerequisites: AUTO 112. Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 170 Auto Heat/Air Condition System
4-2-4 (Lecture/Standard Lab) With strong emphasis on environmental awareness, this class covers theory, operation, diagnostics, and repair of car/light truck heating and cooling systems. Topics include: R-12 and R-134a refrigerants, reclaiming and recycling of these refrigerants, and standard and extended life antifreeze characteristics are also covered. Prerequisites: AUTO 112, AUTO 121. Corequisites: AUTO 112.

AUTO 172 Alt Fuels & Adv Tech Vehicles
2-2-0 (Lecture/Discussion) The rapid increase in fuel prices, coupled with concerns for the environment and air quality, have led many Americans to seek information about alternatives to gasoline, diesel fuel, and other petroleum-based products. This introductory course is designed to provide basic information for the general public, the automotive technician, the employer, the fleet operator, and the instructor and will allow you to begin to understand the nature and extent of the problems, as well as some viable solutions that are currently available or in development. Prerequisites: An interest in environmental quality and energy independence in transportation and a good understanding of basic automotive technology.

AUTO 200 Alternative Auto Propulsion
3-2-2 (Lecture/Standard Lab) This course will be of interest and specifically geared toward existing automotive students as well as technicians already employed in the field. The focus is to provide the student with instruction on alternative automotive propulsion systems that are presently being developed for the automobile transportation industry. Course content will include instruction on theory of operation and service of alternative propulsion systems, with emphasis on safety issues and concerns regarding the servicing of these systems. Prerequisites: ASE Master Automotive Tech Certification or a 2.0 GPA in each of the following courses: AUTO 121, AUTO 130, AUTO 135, AUTO 140, AUTO 141, AUTO 153, AUTO 161, AUTO 170, and ELT 240; or Instructor's Permission.

AUTO 278 Automotive Internship
1-0-0 to 9-0-0 (Variable) The Automotive Internship is a supervised on-the-job learning experience designed to provide students the opportunity to apply automotive competencies in a work environment. Prerequisites: With some exceptions, students must have completed 75% of the coursework in the pursued degree/certificate program and have a grade point of 2.5 in the program and 2.0 overall.
