Kalamazoo Valley Community College

Alumni+ Art Show Opens on April 4

Nearly 60 works of art have been submitted for inclusion in Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s third annual Alumni+ Art Show which opens during Art Hop on April 4. Submissions to the juried show came from Kalamazoo Valley students who have graduated or taken classes in any field at the college.

The show opens at 5:30 p.m. in the Center for New Media, Arcadia Commons Campus in downtown Kalamazoo, as part of the City's monthly Art Hop event. Winners will be announced at 7 p.m. This year’s awards include a $500 Best of Show Award, $300 Director's Award, three $100 Honorable Mentions, and a People’s Choice Award. The show will remain on exhibit in the Center for New Media until the end of April.

The art show is sponsored by Kalamazoo Valley’s Alumni+ program, which was launched in April 2010 as a way for graduates, former students, and supporters of Kalamazoo Valley to stay connected to the college and each other. Denise Thomas, Kalamazoo Valley alum, was recently hired to coordinate the Alumni+ program.

This year’s show is slightly larger than last year’s event and organizers are pleased with the participation from alumni. “This show really demonstrates how talented our alumni are. It will be a spectacular display,” Hamann said.

Also during Art Hop, the Kalamazoo Valley Museum will host a free concert from 6 to 8 p.m. by the band Fly Paper. The four-piece band fuses elements of rock, folk, and blues into an unforgettable musical experience.
