Alumni Janet Lucking's Work at CNM

Art student Janet Lucking, who won a Dean’s Award and Honorable Mention during Kalamazoo Valley’s first Alumni+ Art Show last spring, is holding a solo art exhibit during the month of September in the Center for New Media’s South Gallery. The exhibit will open with an artist’s reception hosted by Lucking from 5 to 8 p.m. during Art Hop on September 7.

Lucking said the exhibit will include a variety of pieces. “Some are like a story, some are still life and some are animals,” she said. “They’re all pieces I’ve done while taking art classes at Valley.”

Lucking said she started drawing when she was a teenager. She studied commercial art at Ferris State University and worked for a time as a commercial artist. When she retired, she decided to try her luck at fine art. She uses a combination of pastel, paint, and colored pencils to create vibrant, detailed pieces. She credits her art instructors at Kalamazoo Valley with encouraging her to enter her work in contests. In addition to winning two awards in the inaugural Alumni+ Art Show, she also won Best of Show award on campus. “I was reluctant to enter because of my age, but Beth Purdy said, ‘You really should enter. Your age has nothing to do with it. You’re a student here,’” Lucking recalled.

Lucking said she likes to create pieces that tell a story and is happy to have had her original interest in fine art rekindled at Kalamazoo Valley.
