About the Program
The Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s Correctional Academy is a Michigan Sheriffs Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC) approved 160-hour certification program for correctional personnel supervising inmates in county jails. This 4-week program will focus on obtaining the skills necessary to maintain the safety and security of a correctional facility. The Corrections Academy is held at the Groves Campus, 7107 Elm Valley Drive, Kalamazoo, MI 49009
Due to limited space for each Academy, candidate evaluations will be conducted to determine admittance to the program. Current cost of the Academy is $1,200. 10 credits will be awarded by Kalamazoo Valley Community College upon successful completion of the Academy. If eligible, The Kalamazoo Promise and VA benefits can be used.

- Booking and Intake
- Correctional Law
- Cultural Diversity
- Custody and Security
- Defensive Tactics
- Ethics
- Fire Safety
- First Aid/CPR/AED
- Interpersonal Communications
- Report Writing
- Stress Management
- Prisoner Mental Health
- PREA
- Professionalism
To be eligible for Academy consideration, participants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a high school diploma, or equivalent
- Apply to become a KVCC Student
- Successfully meet minimum scores on placement tests: Minimum Accuplacer placement of 40 in reading and 76 in writing OR Compass Test score of 61 in reading and 50 in writing. No math testing is required.
- No prior felony convictions (including expunged convictions)
