Meka Phillips: Making Dessert First a Sweet Success

Sweet Business Success: KVCC alumna Meka Phillips poses with one of her signature cakes as owner of Dessert First.

Meka Phillips '04 has been creating sweet treats in Kalamazoo since 2011. Dessert First, located in downtown Kalamazoo, features boutique-style desserts and specialty personalized cakes to celebrate every occasion.

Why did you attend KVCC?
I graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School, and as a local, KVCC was part of my community. After high school, I attended Hampton University, but I returned to KVCC, where I earned my Associate of Science degree before transferring to Western Michigan University to complete my Bachelor of Science.

When did you realize you could turn your idea into a real business?
After college, I worked for PNC Bank. In 2011, I took baking classes for fun at Michael's and was soon asked to teach them. After a couple of years, I started selling desserts at the local farmers' market - and that's when I realized I had built such a strong following that I needed to focus on custom cakes.

Which skills from KVCC show up in your business today?
My classes at KVCC taught me the finance, business, and communication skills I need to run a business and communicate effectively with my staff.

Who helped you along the way?
I had great guidance counselors at KVCC who encouraged me to pursue my dreams. I remember hearing, "Your career should be something you would do for free." Baking is what I love - and I get paid to do it every day.

What's a proud moment or milestone?
Opening my own brick-and-mortar store is one of my biggest accomplishments as an entrepreneur. Knowing I had a vision and followed through with it and seeing the ribbon cutting and community support that day, was proof that I made the right decision.

What advice do you have for current KVCC students who may want to pursue a dream?
Never give up on your dreams. Even when you feel defeated, find like-minded people who can help you see your vision through to the end. My faith in God helps me get up every day and stay in the fight.
