Debt Forgiveness Program

Kalamazoo Valley Community College creates innovative and equitable opportunities that empower all to learn, grow and thrive. In support of this mission, Kalamazoo Valley has launched a program for students who have existing debt at the institution. The Kalamazoo Valley Debt Forgiveness Program is designed for students who are in good academic standing, have stopped out prior to degree completion and have an outstanding financial balance. If existing institutional debt has held you back from achieving your academic goals, Kalamazoo Valley wants to work with you.

Student Eligibility Requirements*

  • Left Kalamazoo Valley with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Has not attended Kalamazoo Valley for six semesters
  • Has an outstanding balance of $2,500 or less
  • Has the ability to pay in full, sign up for the payment plan, or have financial aid cover the balance for the semester they will be re-enrolling at the time of registration (i.e. Student can cover charges for upcoming tuition and fees)
  • Has not already been awarded a degree or certificate from Kalamazoo Valley

*Exceptions to the cumulative GPA requirement may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Student Steps

Indicate interest by completing this application at least one month prior to the beginning of the semester they wish to initially re-enroll.
Re-apply and be readmitted to Kalamazoo Valley
Establish, modify, or confirm an academic plan alongside an advisor or counselor
Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Participate in regular coaching/tutoring/mentoring as outlined by program director
Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater
Attain certificate or degree within 3 academic years of re-enrollment

Results

  • Your financial hold will be modified to allow for registration, grades, etc. as long as above items are met
  • Your financial hold will be removed upon successful completion of a certificate or degree
  • Your previous balance owed will be forgiven – 50% upon successful completion of 12 credits or program completion (whichever occurs first) and the remaining 50% upon successful attainment of a certificate or degree
