April 2025

   Message from the Director

This week I’ve been reading "The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World" by author Robin Wall Kimmerer. Her book is about nature’s abundance and about how it revolves around hundreds of gift exchanges. Kimmerer, who was on campus in November, made observations that reminded me of Kalamazoo Valley alumni.

In one example, she lays out how gift exchanges led to the existence of a pail full of berries: “The Maples who gave their leaves to the soil, the countless invertebrates and microbes who exchanged nutrients and energy to build the humus in which a Serviceberry seed could take root, the Cedar Waxwing who dropped the seed, the sun, the rain, the early spring flies who pollinated the flowers, the farmer who wielded the shovel to tenderly settle the seedlings. They are all parts of the gift exchange by which everyone gets what they need.”

I see many parallels to how your education at Kalamazoo Valley helps create abundance in our community. The time you spent at the college to develop your talents is paving the way for those who follow you in your workplaces and neighborhoods. In your own way, your education is a gift that is contributing to everyone getting what they need in our communities. We’re proud to be a part of such a successful community college that opens opportunity to everyone. Thank you!

April Is Community College Month

Together with more than 1,000 other community colleges across the country, Kalamazoo Valley celebrates Community College Month during April. This monthlong campaign is an opportunity to share with the community not only that Kalamazoo Valley is the first choice of many college-bound students, but also that community colleges are first-class institutions that are vital to our local and state economies.

In Michigan, more than 280,000 students attend community college each year and more than half of all bachelor's degree holders in the state have completed a portion of their coursework at a community college. Michigan is home to 28 public community colleges and three tribal colleges with an average tuition rate of $4,966, compared to $16,280 for a public in-state university.
