June 2025

   Message from the Director

With the arrival of June, my thoughts always turn to the JumpstART weekend in downtown Kalamazoo, June 6 - 8, which includes the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Fair, Art on the Mall and the Do Dah Parade. Kalamazoo Valley Community College will be adding our own contribution to the weekend—our Alumni Art Show opens on Friday, June 6 at the Arcus Gallery in the Center for New Media.

Come check out the works of our talented alumni this Friday and find out at 6 p.m. which alumni artist will win Best of Show! The Alumni Art Show, to me, celebrates one of the best things about our college. Some of the artists took art classes at Kalamazoo Valley, but many of them earned associate degrees in all kinds of other areas, including law enforcement, education, mechanical engineering and dental hygiene. Kalamazoo Valley students are creative, independent, determined and flexible. They know how to pivot, how to create and how to dream different dreams.

Alumni Spotlight: Jodi Rogers

Kalamazoo Valley alumna Jodi Rogers has worked in corporate communications at Kellanova, a Fortune 500 company, for the past 12 years where she focuses on corporate storytelling. She says Kalamazoo Valley contributed greatly to her success.

"Kalamazoo Valley provided a strong academic background, strategic thinking skills and the preparation needed to successfully transition to a university and pursue my bachelor's degree," Rogers said. "It was an affordable option that allowed me to take core credits while I figured out what I wanted to major in, and it let me live and work close to home."

Rogers transferred to Grand Valley State University in 2005 after completing two years at Kalamazoo Valley. The seamless transfer helped her graduate on time and earn the credits she needed to succeed.

"Kalamazoo Valley and Grand Valley State University gave me the skills, knowledge and real-world perspective needed to thrive - including the value of networking and the importance of internships," she said.

These academic experiences helped Rogers pursue her career with the confidence and experience she needed.

"For me, it wasn't just about earning a degree - it was about being exposed to new perspectives, learning strategies and principles from different angles, and discovering interests I didn't know I had," she said. "It helped me think more broadly, grow in ways I couldn't have on my own, and connect with a community of peers, mentors and professionals who shaped my journey."
