The 2009 Opportunities for Education dinner featuring keynote speaker, former Governor of Vermont and canidate for Democratic nomination of President, Howard Dean helped raise in excess of $29,000 for student scholarships.
At a well attended scholarship fund raising dinner held at the Radisson Hotel & Suites in downtown Kalamazoo on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, the KVCC Foundation in partnership with National City Bank / PNC sponsored its 5th annual Opportunities for Education event.
"We were quite pleased at the success of this years event", commented Stephen Doherty, KVCC Foundations Executive Director, "Given the economic climate we are living in today it is a testament to those in this community that attended our event as to how important education really is and the support we received speaks to the awareness of our need for scholarship dollars that assist our students who will one day become important members of our local workforce and our community by allowing them to continue and pursue their educational goals."
The evening consisted of inspirational real life stories from two attending students, Marie "Angie" Sackett and Andrew Taylor who shared their life experiences that led them to pursue an education at KVCC and some of the hurdles they encountered along the way.
Former Governor from Vermont, Howard Dean, talked on healthcare reform and the importance of education and following the evening, marveled at the event itself and how meaningful it was to him to participate in something so terrific. "This event was great, I am going to share my experience here in Kalamazoo with others I speak to around the country and in Washington."
Over the last five years, this event has allowed the KVCC Foundation to provide just under $132,000 towards the college scholarship program supporting its students.
Plans are already underway for next years springtime event.
