MISSION STATEMENT
Kalamazoo Valley Community College creates innovative and equitable
opportunities that empower all to learn, grow and thrive.
April 1, 2025

Greetings College Community,

Together with over 1,000 other community colleges across the country, Kalamazoo Valley will celebrate Community College Month during April. I’m preaching to the choir when I say that community colleges are first-class institutions that are vital to our local and state economies. You know firsthand the importance of the inclusive community college mission.

Community colleges are respected collaborators, leaders and partners, creating innovative and equitable opportunities to prepare learners for existing and emerging careers. For almost 60 years, Kalamazoo Valley has been at the forefront of change and at the workforce and economic development table
collaborating with local, regional and state partners, creating innovative educational and training programs that fuel the economy.

I am proud of the impact that our staff and faculty make on the lives of our students and their families. Kalamazoo Valley Community College employees are among the most dedicated individuals in higher education. You have helped to make the success of our students possible. I admire your unwavering commitment to the college mission.

Therefore, during this month of celebration, I celebrate you and thank you for making Kalamazoo Valley a great place for every student, employee and guest to learn, grow and thrive!

Sincerely,

L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D.
President

Updated: Title IX Policy and Grievance Procedure
Since Aug. 1, 2024, when new Title IX regulations went into effect, the College complied with its legal obligations by updating its policy and procedures and providing required training to its Title IX coordinator, investigators, faculty, staff and administration. The College has also monitored ongoing litigation and regulatory changes. In January, a federal court ruled that the new Title IX regulations were void, and the U.S. Department of Education subsequently issued guidance that the old Title IX regulations, first promulgated in 2020, remain valid and enforceable. Because of this updated guidance from the U.S. Department of Education, the College reviewed, updated and retitled the College’s Sexual Misconduct and Harassment Policy. The updated policy, now titled Title IX Policy and Grievance Procedure, is available here. The Title IX Policy and Grievance Procedure is effective immediately.

Fall Summit Planning Underway

The Summit planning team has been working hard to create an engaging Fall 2025 Summit event. We want to maintain features that work well and implement a few minor adjustments that will help us connect better with your creative ideas.

To start, we’re including two additional links which will allow you to provide us with new suggestions. First, there is a link for session topics so we can locate a Kalamazoo Valley or local expert to lead a session. We’ve received many wonderful suggestions from you in the past that we are working hard to utilize but we would love to hear more of your recommendations. We’re also adding a link to submit ideas for dynamic keynote speakers. Lastly, you will find the traditional link to the call for proposals if you’re excited about offering your own session. We appreciate your contributions!

The deadline to submit Fall 2025 Summit session topics and keynote speaker ideas is Friday, April 18 at 5 p.m. The deadline to submit a proposal is Thursday, May 22

Lead with Your Strengths
We’re excited to reinvest in our journey of being a strengths-based organization by utilizing the CliftonStrengths assessment. It is based on the idea that people are most effective and engaged when they leverage their natural talents.

Here is how to get started:
  • With supervisor approval, register to attend one of the sessions below:
  • You will receive a code from one of the Strengths coaches before the session. The code will allow you to complete the CliftonStrengths assessment. The assessment will take approximately 45 minutes.
  • Attend the session to learn more about how to read your report, dive into your top strengths and focus on what you do best.

Men’s Basketball Caps Stellar Season at National Tournament
It’s been an amazing ride for Kalamazoo Valley’s men’s basketball players this season, first winning their conference, then being named state champs and next finishing No. 4 at the national tournament. While the team did not take home the national title, they won the first round of play and a quarterfinal game, and in doing so made Kalamazoo Valley Community College history. This was the first time that the Cougars have ever won a game at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Men's Basketball Championship since the college’s founding in 1966.

The team had achievement both on and off the court this season: The players collectively had an average GPA of 3.23 for the Fall 2024 semester. Valley Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Horn was named Coach of the Year for the Western Conference of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) for 2024-2025. Also, sophomore guard Joey Liedel was chosen Western Conference Player of the Year, sophomore MaKyle Doss was selected Western Conference Defensive Player of the Year and sophomore Ramere Draper was named to the National All-Tournament Team. Another point of pride was Liedel reaching the rare college career milestone of 1,000 points. Read the full story here. Click here for photos from the Cougars’ March 20 national quarterfinal game.
