MISSION STATEMENT Kalamazoo Valley Community College creates innovative and equitable
opportunities that empower all to learn, grow and thrive.
July 18, 2022
Greetings!
Our work requires a great investment of skill, talent, time and energy. We have come through an amazing year together and now as we look toward the end of the summer semester, we can pause and reflect on this amazing year. As a part of this reflection, I hope that you will be able to take some time away from your work to truly rest and recharge.
I have found that time away from the office, classroom and day-to-day activities allows me to reflect on accomplishments and plan for the future. However you plan to rest and recharge this summer, please know that your efforts are deeply appreciated and that together we are making the college a better place for all to learn, grow and thrive.
Thank you.
L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D.
President
Orientation Help Needed! Increasing enrollment and improving retention are the college's top priorities. As employees of the college, everyone must do their part to attract and retain students. Volunteering your time to share your enthusiasm and knowledge of Kalamazoo Valley is one very easy way to do your part.
There are more than 20 New Student Orientations that will take place between now and September. Everyone - administrators, faculty and staff - are asked to volunteer. Orientation is often the first impression we will make as a college community to engage and inspire our students by demonstrating our unified commitment to students. It's a very small time commitment that, statistics show, can greatly impact a student's success in college. Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions. Training will be provided.
To volunteer for orientation contact Coty Dunten at cdunten@kvcc.edu

Kalamazoo Valley Libraries:
Research and Citation Help, Course Reserves, Summer Book Display and Database Spotlight The Kalamazoo Valley Libraries at the Texas Township Campus and at Anna Whitten Hall are open and available to support you and your students this summer. We are offering a mix of in-person and online services including reserve materials and reference assistance.
Research & Citation Help
If your students need help finding or citing sources for class projects, the libraries have multiple ways to assist them. They may visit us in person to talk to one of our reference librarians. From off campus, students can call or email us. Zoom appointments are available on request. For assistance during non-business hours, the Ask a Librarian 24/7 Chat is always available.
Course Reserves
Textbooks and other course materials are placed on reserve each semester at the request of faculty and students. Instructors may submit personal copies for the reserve collection, or request a library purchase for reserve. Most reserve requests for library purchase are approved, although we suggest submitting your request before the start of the semester to provide us purchasing and processing time.
For more information on course reserves, including a list of all items currently on reserve, visit the library's Course Reserve Guide.
To reserve materials for your course, contact Ashley (TTC) at extension 4313 or abergkamp@kvcc.edu or Franki (ACC) at extension 7848 or fhand@kvcc.edu.
Summer Book Display
No travel plans this summer? No problem. You don't need a plane ticket to travel. Use a book to see the world. Stop into the TTC Library on the lower level and check out our new book display featuring stories set in other countries.
Database Spotlight
Students and staff can explore a huge collection of resources to aid their careers in this issue's featured database. Specific occupation details can be browsed, as well as which professions are most in demand. Vocational tests are available to help find careers which match individual tastes and abilities. Job seekers can find positions and internships, and get advice to write resumes and job letters or prepare for interviews. A library of video courses on basic computer skills and popular software applications is also included. Users can study for career entrance tests in many fields including health care and teaching, or even prepare for a driver's license exam. Find all these resources and much more in LearningExpress Library: Careers or browse everything occupational on our Career Information Databases page. If you ever need help navigating our databases, our friendly library staff are glad to help.
Video Highlights Role of Respiratory Therapists The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care is committed to building awareness of the shortage of respiratory therapists and educators in the field. On the MoreRTs.com website, videos have been added to highlight how respiratory therapists greatly impact patients' lives.
A special TV spot has been developed to promote the organization's efforts - featuring Brianna Collichio, a cystic fibrosis patient with an unstoppable dream to sing, and her inspiring story about the role respiratory therapy played in making her dream come true. Watch the video and share it.
Read or watch the longer version of Briana's story here. We need you to help us share all our stories. If you have a patient or RT story to suggest, contact www.morerts.com/contact/.
