Spring into Valley Baseball, Softball Seasons with a Home Game

Softball and baseball seasons are underway at Kalamazoo Valley Community College! Conference play will continue through early May with a combination of home and away games. Be sure to visit athletics.kvcc.edu for the full schedule of games, plus scores.

The Lady Cougars' roster features 11 incoming freshmen who bring significant talent and depth, adding competitiveness across all positions. They will join other sophomores and four of them earning All-Conference recognition last season. They provide valuable experience, leadership and consistency. This combination of emerging talent and returning talent is putting this program for continued growth and success.

Offensively, the Lady Cougs are expected to be a disciplined and productive lineup, focused on plate discipline and generating runs. Defensively, the team's emphasis will be on clean execution, limiting errors and providing strong support for the pitchers. The addition of assistant coach Mike Mottl further strengthens the program, as he brings valuable knowledge and insight to the coaching staff.

Head Coach Karau is thrilled. "Overall, this season presents an exciting opportunity for the Kalamazoo Valley Lady Cougars to compete at a high level and continue building a strong softball culture," she said.

As for the baseball team, it is contending with one of the biggest transitions in program history. Graduation and advancement have moved 10 players on to the next level, including JJ Manion, the all-time winningest pitcher in Kalamazoo Valley's history. Head Coach Steve Bennecke's expectations remain high as the Cougars look to reload rather than rebuild. He believes this is his strongest freshman class and believes this team can be special.

The foundation starts behind the plate. All-Conference Ty Trosen returns as a proven presence and will be leaned on to be the leader to our young pitching staff. Tate Wesbecker gained valuable experience a year ago, throwing meaningful innings in pressure situations and that growth will be critical as he steps into a larger role. The next wave of arms will come from a talented freshman class, led by Colin Hoenle, Tyler Marx and Timmy Crowley. Their ability to adjust quickly could determine how fast the Cougars settle into their new identity on the hill.

Offensively, leadership will be just as important. Kaydn Stahlhood and Ryder Wolnik are expected to set the tone and provide consistency in the lineup after the loss of several key bats. Support will need to come early from newcomers Troy Scarff, Teddy Winstel and Brody Houseman, who are being counted on to contribute right away.

"While this season will undoubtedly look different, the standard hasn't changed and the Cougars are poised to prove that their success is built to last," Coach Bennecke said.
